Solar Autoclave Testing Around the Globe!

Our partners at Innovations in International Health and Grupo Fenix have spear headed new designs and testing for the solar autoclave. In March 2010, we traveled to Nicaragua to work with Grupo Fenix on the efficiency of the solar cookers as a method for sterilizing medical instruments in an autoclave pressure vessel. In addition to field testing the solar autoclave, we also had a chance to meet with the Solar Women's cooperative, who have recently begun laying the adobe bricks by hand for the new Solar Restaurant!

Ted Liao and Katie Inman of IIH are testing a smaller boiler system which generates small amounts of steam for single load sterilization in a table top pressure vessel.

Paul Hlebowitsh of IIH is testing the circuits for the sterilization indicator. This part of the device visually communicates that the required temperature and pressure have been reached to ensure sterilization of the medical instruments.

Susan Kinne of Grupo Fenix and Amber Houghstow of IIH are testing a solar cooker in Totogalpa, Nicaragua.

Online Source for Information on Surgery in Developing Countries
Global Health Delivery Online is an incredible resource to engaging with academics and practitioners of global health interested in surgical needs for the developing world. GHDOnline is the online platform of communities developed by the Global Health Delivery Project. It is where health care implementers share proven practices, connect with colleagues, and find resources they need to improve health outcomes in resource-limited settings. This website is supported by a consortium of partners including: Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Partners in Health and The François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard School of Public Health.
